TMD Assessment in Practice: Recognising and Managing Clenching, Grinding and Myofascial Pain
A practical study group on assessing clenching, grinding and myofascial TMD, with an introduction to botulinum toxin A as an adjunctive management option.
What you will cover
Join Dr Tami Lampert for a practical session on assessing patients presenting with parafunctional habits and muscle-based temporomandibular disorders (TMD), including clenching, grinding and myofascial pain. The session also introduces botulinum toxin A as a possible adjunct within a wider management pathway.
Aim
To equip delegates with a structured, evidence-based approach to assessing and managing patients with myofascial TMD related to bruxism and clenching, and to introduce the role of botulinum toxin A within the wider management pathway.
Learning objectives
By the end of the session, delegates will be able to:
- Identify the key clinical signs and symptoms of myofascial pain and parafunctional activity (clenching/grinding) as distinct from other TMD subgroups (internal derangement, arthrogenous disease).
- Apply a systematic history and examination approach to differentiate muscle-driven TMD from other orofacial pain presentations.
- Outline first-line conservative management strategies (education, self-care, splint therapy and simple analgesia) in line with current evidence.
- Describe the rationale, evidence base and considerations for using botulinum toxin A as an adjunct in refractory myofascial/bruxism-related TMD.
- Recognise red flags requiring onward referral.
Session information
Tuesday 3 November 2026, 8:00–9:00pm (UK time). This online study group provides one hour of verifiable CPD. The session will not be recorded. Certificates will be emailed following the session once the study-group fee and completed feedback form have been received.
The £20 single-session fee or £100 annual pass is a donation to Linda Greenwall’s charity, the Dental Wellness Trust. For more information, contact the ConnectEd team through the website.
